“Grandma’s Yellow Scooter”
1981 Yamaha SA50 Passola
Restore • Recondition • Recommission
This 1981 Yamaha Passola SA50 arrived at Quadrant Motorcycles carrying far more than mechanical history — it carried family history, memory and nostalgia spanning generations.
Originally purchased new by the current owner’s father for his mother, the little yellow Yamaha became a familiar sight on the rural roads of County Cavan, Ireland throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. Used for journeys to Mass, local shops and neighbouring villages, the Passola became something of a local icon, affectionately remembered by many as “Mrs. Clarke’s wee yellow bike.”
Following the owner’s grandmother’s passing, the motorcycle remained untouched in a family shed for decades. Last used on the road in 1994, the bike sat quietly preserved in time until the current owner entrusted Quadrant Motorcycles with a very personal project — a surprise restoration for the wider family, many of whom remained in Ireland and America.
The brief was clear from the outset: preserve the soul and originality of the motorcycle while sympathetically restoring it to reliable running condition for future generations to enjoy.
Quadrant Motorcycles carried out a full restoration, reconditioning and recommissioning programme including:
Complete Yamaha Passola engine rebuild
New piston, connecting rod and full bearing replacement
New main bearings, big-end bearings and little-end bearings
Full gasket and seal replacement throughout
Crankcases, cylinder head and barrel vapour blasted
Cylinder barrel refinished in correct paint finish
Carburettor fully stripped, cleaned and rebuilt
Oil injection system stripped, cleaned and recommissioned
Vacuum-operated fuel system rebuilt with new diaphragms, hoses and seals
Centrifugal clutch and transmission fully stripped, cleaned and rebuilt
New tyres, inner tubes and brake shoes fitted
New control cables installed throughout
NOS complete exhaust system sourced and fitted
Rare NOS floor panel sourced from Australia due to severe corrosion in the original component
Wheels and fuel tank refinished in an off-white tone to the customer’s request
Original plastics carefully cleaned and polished, preserving factory decals and originality
In keeping with the sentimental nature of the project, many original touchpoints were intentionally retained rather than over-restored. The original frame was carefully cleaned and preserved in its factory finish, while the original seat and handlebar grips used daily by the owner’s grandmother were sympathetically cleaned and retained as a direct connection to the motorcycle’s past.
Alongside the restoration itself, Quadrant Motorcycles also assisted with international shipping logistics, re-registration support and return-to-road preparation for use once again in the Republic of Ireland.
The emotional response following the surprise reveal exceeded all expectations. Family members across Ireland and America were brought to tears seeing the little Yamaha returned to life after more than 30 years. Today, the Passola remains in regular family use, with multiple generations now taking turns riding Grandma’s wee yellow motorcycle once again.
