“Forgotten Stinger”

1989 Kawasaki ZXR750 H1

Restore • Recondition • Recommission

This 1989 Kawasaki ZXR750 H1 “Stinger” arrived at Quadrant Motorcycles as a remarkably original low-mileage UK motorcycle with fewer than 12,000 miles recorded from new.

A true icon of the late 1980s superbike era, the H1 represented Kawasaki at its rawest — aggressive, uncompromising and unmistakably engineered with one eye firmly on endurance racing and World Superbike competition.

The motorcycle had spent much of its life off the road. Following long-term storage by the original owner during the mid-to-late 1990s, the bike remained untouched for decades before eventually passing to the owner’s son in 2015 after the original owner sadly passed away. A brief recommissioning and MOT saw the bike return momentarily to the road before being sold to its current custodian.

The customer’s brief for Quadrant Motorcycles was refreshingly clear:

“Preserve the originality — they’re only original once.”

As such, this project became a sympathetic recommissioning and preservation exercise rather than a cosmetic restoration. Original paint finishes, factory coatings and period patina were intentionally retained wherever possible.

However, despite its originality, years of improper storage preparation had inevitably taken their toll. Residual road grime and trapped contaminants had caused corrosion in several common ZXR750 problem areas, particularly around the braking systems, exhaust headers and Kawasaki’s distinctive Rising Sun Uni-Trak (RSU) rear suspension linkage.

Storage damage had also affected parts of the bodywork and fuel tank due to items being knocked against the motorcycle over many years in the garage environment.

Work completed to date includes:

  • Full front and rear brake system restoration

  • Brake calipers, master cylinders and front brake splitter stripped and ultrasonically cleaned

  • Complete brake system rebuild with new seals throughout

  • NOS caliper bridge bolts sourced and fitted

  • Original ageing rubber brake hoses replaced with sympathetic black HEL braided lines

  • Swingarm and RSU linkage removed and rebuilt with new bearings and seals

  • New chain and sprockets fitted retaining original factory gearing

  • Carburettors fully stripped, ultrasonically cleaned and rebuilt

  • New seals and gaskets fitted throughout carburettor assemblies

  • Carburettors vacuum balanced and synchronised for crisp throttle response

  • K&N air filter installed at customer request

  • Original fuel tank replaced with genuine NOS tank due to storage damage

  • NOS side panels sourced and fitted

  • Original windscreen restored through careful cutting and machine polishing to remove chemical staining and discolouration

  • Front headlamp unit replaced with rare NOS assembly after electrical short damaged original lens

  • Original H1 exhaust headers removed due to poor historic repair work

  • Period-correct full Micron exhaust system sourced and installed

  • Original muffler retained for future restoration and preservation purposes

Particular attention was paid throughout the recommissioning process to preserving the motorcycle’s character and originality rather than over-restoring it. The result is a machine that still feels authentic to its age and history while delivering the sharp throttle response, intake noise and unmistakable character that made the early ZXR models legendary.

Once balanced and dialled in correctly, the rebuilt carburettors transformed the riding experience — delivering smooth, immediate throttle pickup and that unmistakable free-revving inline-four surge unique to the era.

The engine now pulls effortlessly, almost floating through the rev range on a cushion of air…

…although the notoriously firm stock RSU rear suspension remains exactly as Kawasaki intended.

If you know, you know.

This project stands as an excellent example of sympathetic motorcycle recommissioning — preserving originality, factory finishes and period character while carefully returning a significant superbike icon to reliable road use once again.
